Welcome to McMaster Engineers Without Borders!

Stash To Cash

Guess who's shaving?

The ONE, the ONLY, Dr. Brian Baetz!

BUT, there's a catch. Every year the EWB Junior Fellowship (JF) Program sends volunteers overseas to work with EWB's African Programs in Ghana, Malawi, Zambia and Burkina Faso. Last year we sent two volunteers, and we would like to continue to do so. That is why we are collecting donations to reach a goal of $6500 (the cost of sending one JF overseas).

If we reach this goal by January 28th, 2011, Dr. Brian Baetz - Director of Engineering and Society - will shave off his mustache!

Also look out for donations in JHE!

Reverse Trick or Treat

It's time to make Halloween FAIR! No, we won't keep your siblings from steal your candy. BUT we will make it FAIR TRADE!

We're go door to door this Halloween handing our Fair Trade chocolates and information in the Dundas community!
And we're doing it with our pals WUSC McMaster and Mac Green!

The game plan is to get our community to think about where we get our goods from, and why fair trade is awesome. We're getting Canadians to plug into ethical supply-chains to make positive social change. So meet up on FRIDAY OCTOBER 28th at 6PM INFRONT OF BSB to spread the word!

So if you can't come out, you can still spread our message, let the community know that being socially conscious can include the spookiest holiday of the year:
Ask for fair trade chocolates, be able to locate the Fairtrade Certified logo, and tell friends about buying fair trade Halloween chocolates.

For more information on ethical purchasing, visit http://fairtrade.ca/.

Win/Win with IATI

What's inside the box?! Problem is we don't know and there is currently little information to determine that...This is symbolic of how Canada's current aid system operates. We know that money is going in but when it comes to where this money goes specifically and what the results are it remains a mystery to Canadians

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Canada wants to see that changed and have Canada emerge as a leader in aid transparency and global development. How you ask? By signing on to the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI)

WHAT IS IATI?

IATI is an agreement among many major donors, including the UK, the World Bank and the European Commission, to report on aid spending using common definitions and a common electronic format, and to make aid reports publicly available.

By signing on to IATI, Canada will agree to use a standard reporting format for our aid expenditures, and will agree to disclose where our funding goes. It will have an incredible impact overseas, but also right here in Canada. This is not a controversial agreement – it is simple and fundamental.

EWB and the McMaster Student Centre's Civic Engagement unit have partnered to bring this nation-wide Black Box event to our campus and help raise awareness of aid transparency in the McMaster community. It falls on OCTOBER 17TH, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Keep an eye out for the black boxes on Monday and come out to "Vote for transparency"

There will also be other campus groups present to promote poverty eradication. Those groups include:

-Red Cross Society of McMaster
- Students Crossing Borders
- Pakistan Development Fund
- I am Powerful
- Free the Children
- Charity:Water@Mac
- McMaster Community Poverty Initiative

Hope to see you there!
